Thyme to turnip the beet at the Stanislaus County Fair

Turlock, CA (June 27, 2019) – Don’t miss out on the exciting competitions and events hosted by the Floriculture department this year at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds.
Floriculture is so much more than just floral arrangements and potted plants. There is a huge umbrella of Floriculture including: small engines, plant science, and even the marketing of plants!
“For four years, I participated in Future Farmers of America (FFA) and didn’t know much about Floriculture. It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I learned about plant science and found my true passion,” said Lauren Cabral, MJC Plant Science Major. “If only I knew about plant science earlier, who knows where I could have been by now.”
Come join members of the area as they compete in our very own “Chopped Gone Floral” competition on Saturday, July 13th, 2019 at 1 p.m. Similar to the cooking show, Chopped, on Food Network, the contestants will have 45 mins to complete a floral arrangement that will be judged. The first-place winner will receive a cash prize of $200! We highly encourage you come check out this entertaining event sponsored by Fresh Ideas Floral Company.
In addition, Floriculture will be hosting a Small Engines competition on Friday, July 19th, 2019 starting at 5:30 p.m. Three teams will have to fix a “bug” in their small engine, a piece of landscape equipment. First team to get their engine started will be the winner!
There will also be many different hands on activities such as seed bombs, fairy garden doors, succulent plants, and the reading of the storybook “The Frightened Frog”. For any extra information, please visit our website at the following address: Stancofair.com/Fair/CompetitiveExhibits/DailyContests. “The biggest goal for the Floriculture department is to reach out to the next generation of students as well as fairgoers. We want to include the thoughts and opinions of others and see what our community finds to be interesting. There is so much to be a part of when it comes to floriculture and all that it entails. It’s all about finding your niche. It is not just for those apart of a garden club or any specific program, anyone can do it and we encourage you to come and find out more! We would love to have you,” said Bunnie Becker, Floriculture Superintendent.

New generation of Hispanic music at the StanCoFair!

Turlock, CA (June 12, 2019) – Ulices Chaidez brings a fresh new face and sound to Turlock this year!

The Stanislaus County Fair welcomes Ulices Chaidez on Sunday, July 14, 2019.  He will be performing on the Coors Light Variety Free Stage at 8:30 p.m. The concert will be hosted by La Favorita and is free with the price of Fair admission.

“Hispanic acts always attract such an energetic crowd to our Fair,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. “We are excited to welcome Ulices and his band this year!”

This trio of new generation Mexican Regional corrido and banda trio is led by the teenage singer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Ulices Chaidez.

The band hails from Navolato Sinaloa, and its name is an homage to one of Chaidez‘s heroes, the late Airel Camacho y Los Plebes del Rancho. Chaidez has been playing music since he was six. Besides guitar, he plays fife, bass, and drums, and is studying accordion and violin. He worked solo with another group of guitarists while he was in high school (Ulices Chaidez y Sus Humildes), playing festivals and talent competitions locally and regionally. A Del Records executive caught one of their YouTube videos and signed the young singer, who was then 15.

His new band, the Plebes, were formed with the same instrumentation as Camacho‘s group. Ulices Chaidez y Sus Plebes issued their first single, “Andamos en el Ruedo,” in August 2016. It went straight to the top spot on several Latin Songs charts, and the band was profiled in Billboard. The song’s video received over 1 million views. Their debut full-length, also titled Andamos en el Ruedo, was issued in October, with the group’s sophomore effort, El Elegido, arriving the following year.

Free transit buses to drop off at the Fair’s Arch Gate

Turlock, CA (June 6, 2019) –City of Turlock officials have approved free bus rides on Turlock Transit fixed routes from July 1-31, 2019, to include the run of the Stanislaus County Fair (July 12-21, 2019). Turlock Transit will join the other three transit systems in Stanislaus County (CAT, MAX, and StaRT) to provide free rides on all fixed routes as part of a special, grant-funded promotion.

Local and regional transit buses will drop off patrons at the Roger K. Fall Transit Center located at Hawkeye Avenue and Golden State Boulevard, and another pair of buses will shuttle guests from the Transit Center to the Fair’s Arch Gate on Broadway.

“The Fair is excited and thankful to partner with the Turlock’s Transit system once again,” said Matt Cranford, CEO of the Stanislaus County Fair. “We are also thankful that the transit system was able to approve a drop off at our Arch Gate.”

All Turlock Transit fixed route buses will offer free rides and can be used to travel to the Transit Center to connect to the Fair shuttle buses. Route 2, as highlighted in the map provided, will run an additional bus for increased frequency and pick up patrons from Lot 2 at CSU Stanislaus on Monte Vista Ave. and drop them off at the Transit Center with pickup times every 10 minutes.  The shuttle buses will pick up guests at the Arch Gate every 15 minutes and return to the Transit Center for guests to take a fixed route bus back to their original location.  Shuttle buses will run daily through 11:30 p.m. when the Fair closes, as well as during Fair hours on Sundays, while Turlock Transit fixed route buses will run until 12:00 a.m. to ensure guests catching the last shuttle bus can complete their ride home.

“We’re excited to participate in this joint promotion with all of the transit systems in Stanislaus County to provide free rides to the public on fixed route buses, including enhanced service during the Fair,” said Wayne York, Transit Manager for the City of Turlock. “We encourage residents to take advantage of this service that not only provides free and convenient connectivity directly to the Arch Gate, but reduces traffic congestion and improves air quality at the same time.”

Riding the bus is accessible to all patrons coming to Turlock during Fair, including individuals with wheelchairs or other mobility devices.  The Transit Center will be open for extended hours to provide access to restrooms, drinking fountains, and an air-conditioned lobby. The route schedule can be found online at www.turlocktransit.com.  Fair-specific transportation information can be found at www.turlocktransit.com/fair.  Convenient, sustainable, and powered by natural gas, Turlock Transit makes getting around town easier.

In addition to fixed route buses, Turlock Transit will also be providing ADA paratransit service to eligible passengers through its reservation-based Dial-a-Ride program. This service will operate during the same operating hours as fixed route services.  While Dial-a-Ride services are not part of the free fare promotion, it does provide a curb-to-curb transportation option for individuals with limited mobility.  Residents interested in obtaining eligibility for Dial-a-Ride can contact MOVE Stanislaus at (209) 232-5092.  Reservations for trips can be made between 1-14 days in advance by calling Turlock Transit at (209) 668-5600.

Funds to provide these transportation services are provided through a combination of federal and state transit grants to encourage transit ridership, including funding from the Low Carbon Transit Operations Program (LCTOP) to improve air quality.  In addition, a financial partnership between the City of Turlock and the Stanislaus County Fair assisted in funding associated with the new, Fair shuttle bus service.

“We would like patrons riding the free buses to plan accordingly with timing, bringing strollers, and having wheelchairs,” said Adrenna Alkhas, marketing and communication director for the Stanislaus County Fair.  “There is only one connection at the Transit Center where guests have to transfer to the bus coming to the Fair.”

INSPIRING FUTURE LEADERS THROUGH THE empowHER LOUNGE AT THE STANISLAUS COUNTY FAIR!

Turlock, CA (June 4, 2019) – The Stanislaus County Fair is the place for young women to be this summer!

The Stanislaus County Fair has once again partnered with Vintage Faire Mall, Yonan’s Jewelers, Posh Photo Booth, Women’s Education and Leadership League (WELL) and KHOP @ 95.1 to bring guests a resourceful lounge that will help cultivate empowerment and confidence in young women. The empowHER Lounge is dedicated to inspiring girls 16 and older to not only empower themselves, but also those around them.

“The empowHER Lounge is a great source for young women in our community to be exposed to various life topics that may seem basic but can, in fact, determine what type of person they will be as future leaders,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. “This lounge will make them aware of the importance of their online image, feeling confident, speaking up when necessary and finding one’s cause, among many other subjects.”

Alkhas created the lounge with the mentality of teaching young women how to support and nurture one another instead of subduing to the female norm of consistently competing and comparing. Setting such a tone will undeniably yield successful leaders of the future. Through informative and interactive workshops, the empowHER Lounge will be able to support this goal. W.E.L.L. Leadership, a woman’s education and leadership league will be providing daily presentations on how one should conduct themselves in different aspects of their daily lives. Guests who sign up for the seminars will also receive a Fair and Vintage Faire Mall Swag bag (maximum of 40 guests per session will be allowed).
